Tau Biology and Pathology in and Beyond Alzheimer’s Disease

The Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research (CMMR) at Baylor College of Medicine is pursuing numerous research and development efforts in the study of how the microbiome impacts human disease and how this knowledge can be translated into novel therapeutics and diagnostics. Among these efforts is a new study involving the impact of major disasters, such as Hurricane Harvey, where associated flooding and other environmental exposures to chemicals or pathogens (e.g. mold), and their impact on human health, may be reflected in the microbiome of exposed individuals.

Protein therapeutics is one of the major drug modalities in the biopharma industry. With more and more elucidation of disease pathology, the development of next generation protein therapeutics has become the trend of protein therapeutics development. Unfortunately, these next generation biologics (NGBs) such as fusion proteins exhibit additional levels of complexity beyond regular monoclonal antibody therapeutics.

The past decade has witnessed an emergence of technologies from various disciplines that are providing unprecedented opportunities to formulate and answer new types of biological questions. In particular, single-molecule approaches are revolutionizing biological inquiries by providing previously unattainable data on elementary biological processes. Because biological molecules do not function in isolation in the cell, measurements need to be improved to better emulate in vivo conditions by studying more-complex systems with many components, and they need to be applied to the cellular levels and even tissue levels. This Cell Press webinar will discuss the latest advances in single molecule technologies, and the challenges and opportunities associated with their extension to very large scales and in interpreting the large and complex datasets.
