Discovery of RNA therapies, such as antisense oligonucleotides, small interfering RNA, and, somewhat topically, mRNA vaccines, is becoming an increasingly important component of drug discovery research. This applies to both smaller companies focused on specific therapeutic types and to large biopharma, who often apply a multi-modal (i.e., “whatever works”) approach to solving disease problems. A feature of this research is that it typically involves cross-functional teams of chemists and biologists, working together to drive innovations for the types of chemical modifications of RNAs that are required to optimize efficacy and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic property profiles. In order for these teams to work effectively and productively, it is critical that data capture, management, and analysis systems are able to handle these novel entity types and present data in ways that suit the respective needs of the team. This means that informatics systems must be equally adept at storing and representing the same entity as both a chemical structure and biological sequence.

Maize is one of the most economically important crops globally and much effort has been spent generating the high quality B73 reference genome. However, the 10 chromosome, 2.3 gigabase (Gb) B73 reference genome was a substantial challenge due to the fact it is comprised of 85% transposable elements, 75% of which are long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons that share high sequence similarity and form nested repeat structures. Ultralong Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) holds the promise of traversing the complex repeat structures of maize and enabling rapid sequencing of new breeding lines.

Fluidigm introduced its Maxpar Human Immune Monitoring Panel Kit for comprehensive immune cell profiling in cancer and immune-mediated diseases. The immune monitoring kit contains 29 metal-labeled antibodies and reagents designed for deep immune profiling of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in one tube. The single-tube assay enables combinatorial information to be obtained from each sample, eliminates daughter tube variation, and offers a simplified workflow that reduces hands-on time, the company says. The kit is designed for use with the Helios system for mass cytometry.
