United Health Foundation Partners With Harris-Stowe State University to Create New Bioinformatics Program

Harris-Stowe State University, United Health Foundation | November 20, 2021

The United Health Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), has awarded a $2 million, three-year grant to Harris-Stowe State University to create a bioinformatics program for undergraduate students at the historically Black university located in St. Louis. Bioinformatics is an emerging field that combines science, physics, math and biology to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and discovery of new therapeutic advancements. An example of bioinformatics is the use of computer analysis on the Human Genome Project, which has recorded the 3 billion basic pairs of the human DNA system.

HSSU will develop a new undergraduate program to train students for careers as bioinformatics professionals. HSSU will use the support to

  • Develop new curricula combining coursework and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Expose high school students in surrounding school districts to the field of bioinformatics through a summer bioinformatics “boot camp” program.
  • Offer academic scholarships for up to 25 students each year.

In the past decade, Harris-Stowe State University has emerged as a leader in training students for high-tech careers. This new program will help us to build on that important work, as well as continue to fulfill our mission of serving historically underrepresented students. Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing field of study, and it is vital for all people to play a role in its advancement.”

Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, interim president of HSSU

Studies have shown that there is a substantial gap in the number of diverse college students trained in biomedical sciences. Black, Hispanic and Native American people account for only 7.1% of the employed biological/biomedical and life sciences workforce, according to the National Science Foundation. A diverse health workforce helps provide personalized, culturally competent care to an increasingly diverse population.

“The United Health Foundation is honored to collaborate with Harris-Stowe State University to increase the diversity of the life sciences workforce. We are excited about HSSU training students who will make discoveries, develop therapies and advance health care for all,” said Patrick Quinn, CEO of UnitedHealthcare in Missouri, a UnitedHealth Group company. “This partnership illustrates UnitedHealth Group’s commitment to health equity and to building a diverse health workforce reflective of our society.”

The commitment in Missouri is one of many ways UnitedHealth Group is working to advance health equity by diversifying the health workforce of the future. The United Health Foundation’s Diverse Scholars Initiative, for example, partners with nine nonprofit and civic organizations and has provided over 3,000 scholarships to diverse students studying medicine and public health across the U.S. since 2007. Optum Technology, part of Optum which is a UnitedHealth Group company, offers a mentor-led STEM program that has provided science, technology, engineering and mathematics training to over 7,000 diverse and underrepresented students at 103 middle and high schools since 2019. Poseida Therapeutics Announces FDA Clearance of Investigational New Drug Application for P-CD19CD20-ALLO1, an Allogeneic Dual CAR-T Cell Therapy

PRNewswire | July 10, 2023

Poseida Therapeutics, Inc. a clinical-stage cell and gene therapy company advancing a new class of treatments for patients with cancer and rare diseases, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared its Investigational New Drug (IND) application for P-CD19CD20-ALLO1, the Company's first allogeneic dual CAR-T cell product candidate, which targets both CD19 and CD20 antigens for the treatment of relapsed or refractory B-cell malignancies and is being developed in partnership with Roche. "We are pleased to receive IND clearance for P-CD19CD20-ALLO1, our third fully allogeneic CAR-T cell product candidate and the second therapy in our partnership with Roche for hematological malignancies that will enter the clinic. We believe this represents the FDA's first known IND clearance of an allogeneic dual CAR-T therapy targeting CD19 and CD20," said Kristin Yarema, Ph.D., President, Cell Therapy at Poseida. "The dual-targeting approach leverages our proprietary non-viral piggyBac® DNA Delivery System, which enables expression of two fully functional CAR molecules into T cells from healthy donors for the treatment of B-cell malignancies that may have heterogeneous antigen expression. We believe that targeting both CD19 and CD20 has the potential to overcome the limitations of currently available CD19-directed CAR-T products where antigen escape has been observed as an important resistance mechanism. It has been estimated that up to 40% of cases where B-cell malignancies relapse or are refractory to CD19 targeting autologous CAR-T therapy may involve antigen escape. We look forward to dosing the first patients in this study." P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 will be evaluated in a Phase 1 multi-center, open-label, dose-escalation study that will enroll up to 70 adult patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell malignancies. The study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of P-CD19CD20-ALLO1. After enrollment, patients will receive a chemotherapy-based lymphodepletion regimen followed by administration of P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 allogeneic CAR-T cells. With the P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 IND now cleared, the Company is actively focused on opening clinical sites. About P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 is an allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy product candidate being developed for relapsed or refractory B-cell malignancies in partnership with Roche. P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 expresses two fully functional CAR molecules to target cells that express either CD19 or CD20. The dual targeting approach employed in P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 aims to overcome the antigen escape limitations of CD19-only targeted CAR-T therapies by simultaneously targeting both CD19 and CD20. In addition to the dual targeting, P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 uses a novel CD19 binder that showed greater potency in in vivo preclinical models when compared to the canonical FMC63 Single-chain variable fragment (scFv) binder. P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 is an off-the-shelf CAR-T therapy for which patients do not have to undergo apheresis and wait for the cells to be manufactured, which can potentially overcome the limitation of autologous CAR-T therapies associated with significant manufacturing times. P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 will be studied in multiple B-cell malignancies About Poseida Therapeutics, Inc. Poseida Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company advancing differentiated cell and gene therapies with the capacity to cure certain cancers and rare diseases. The Company's pipeline includes allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy product candidates for both solid and liquid tumors as well as in vivo gene therapy product candidates that address patient populations with high unmet medical need. The Company's approach to cell and gene therapies is based on its proprietary genetic editing platforms, including its non-viral piggyBac® DNA Delivery System, Cas-CLOVER™ Site-Specific Gene Editing System and nanoparticle and hybrid gene delivery technologies.

Tempus Announces Companion Diagnostic Collaboration with TScan Therapeutics

Businesswire | July 07, 2023

Tempus, a leader in artificial intelligence and precision medicine, announced a new collaboration to develop a companion diagnostic (CDx) test with TScan Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of T cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cell therapies (TCR-T) for the treatment of cancer patients. The collaboration supports TScan’s screening protocol for its Phase 1 solid tumor clinical trial which is designed to enable customized mixtures of TCR-Ts to be administered to patients based on tumor antigen positivity and intact HLA expression. TCR-Ts genetically reprogram a patient’s immune system to recognize and fight their cancers. TScan plans to enroll patients with solid tumors including non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer. Up to 40% of these tumors lose half of their HLA genes, which is a frequent and overlooked cause of resistance to immunotherapies such as TCR-Ts. TScan is collaborating with Tempus to use the xT assay, Tempus’ 648-gene panel, to prospectively identify patients with HLA loss in the tumor to select TCR-Ts that recognize HLA genes still intact in the patient’s tumor. “Utilizing the assay developed in collaboration with Tempus will help determine if the clinical trial participants’ tumors have undergone partial HLA loss and so will enable us to choose the most appropriate TCR-Ts that are customized for the patient’s tumor antigens and preserved HLA genes,” said Debora Barton, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at TScan. “The breadth and depth of selection criteria in this study, including the Tempus companion diagnostic, has the potential to help a significant number of patients across multiple solid tumor types through identification of patients most likely to respond to TCR-T treatment.” “This CDx work is unique because we’re looking for information that’s not currently in the list of readouts you typically receive from next-generation sequencing of a solid tumor,” said Michael Yasiejko, Executive Vice President at Tempus. “Tempus is uniquely positioned to develop a custom pipeline to extract information from standard tests that need to guide TCR-T therapy development and ultimately help identify patients that may benefit from these therapies.” About Tempus Tempus is a technology company advancing precision medicine through the practical application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. With one of the world’s largest libraries of clinical and molecular data, and an operating system to make that data accessible and useful, Tempus enables physicians to make near real-time, data-driven decisions to deliver personalized patient care and in parallel facilitates discovery, development and delivery of optimal therapeutics. The goal is for each patient to benefit from the treatment of others who came before by providing physicians with tools that learn as the company gathers more data.
