Importance of Metadata Cataloging in Research

Data sprawl is a systemic problem across both government and private industry. There is a struggle in most environments to understand what data exists in the environment, protect against loss of that data as employees transition, and proactively manage the valuable data assets. In research data, there is no catalog of the dataset or what parameters were used to create the processed data. At best the whereabouts of the data, sometimes with a description of the data, is tracked by the individual researcher in a spreadsheet or by what directory the data is stored.
